Lake Garda in September

Saturday 7th 9:00am departure from CC, the drive to APH Parking was easy, first challenge of the day, was catching the bus to Gatwick airport, after 15 minutes we realised we were standing in the wrong place and the bus was the other side of the building (not listening to instruction #1)! Ten minutes to the airport and a human being to check us in at the TUI desk before entering the hell that is North Terminal on the first Saturday after the grandchildren have gone back to school.

The flight was on time and only 1 hour 40 mins, helped by a glass of NZ wine. A very lengthy wait for the baggage followed by the bliss of the 30 minutes private transfer meant we were soon at the Hotel Continental. Our room was unspectacular but quite comfortable (once we got used to the hard beds) with a balcony overlooking the pool. The dinner menu was limited choice, but it did include penne pasta, hooray!

Sunday 8th As it was raining we started off by attending the welcome meeting from the TUI rep. Of course we didn’t pay too much attention to him but met a lovely couple, Heather and Chester from Edinburgh who were frequent visitors to Lake Garda and who gave us some very helpful ideas, especially for walking.

The rain continued resulting in our first purchase, two umbrellas, which were rainbow coloured!  The morning sheeted with rain and the wind blew (we later learned that some of the ferries had been cancelled) so it was a perfect day for mooching around Garda’s amazing array of shops.  The sun came out in the afternoon and it was beautiful.

Monday 9th  The weather was great today and thanks to Heather and Chester, we had a brilliant day walking 10 miles from Garda to Bardolino, Cisano and Lazise and all on the flat by the lakeside.  There was always a great view and various interesting things to look at including boats, and a boat lift! We stopped for coffee in Bardolino, lunch in Lazise (pizza and chips) and a look round the shops before getting the ferry back to Bardolino. We went up on deck for the view, which was obscured by the life rafts!  From Bardolino we walked back to Garda, via the bus station for a timetable and back to our balcony for wine and munchies. It was a very good day to choose for this long walk as not too hot at this stage of the week.
